Are you ready for new Medicare cards? It's about time right?

Updated: Jan 15, 2018

Medicare released an update that beginning in April 2018 Medicare beneficiaries should begin receiving their new cards with new ID numbers. There is a planned transition period where they will accept either the old HICN number or the new MBI (that's what they are calling the new ID number). That transition period will end on January 1, 2020, at least that it the plan as they state it now. We know how these dates and their systems integrate. There were some exceptions that were stated in the release including appeals which both would be accepted, among other exceptions that should be reviewed. The ID will be 11 digits and alpha-numeric.

I for one think it is about time that we leave the dinosaur ages where our social is plastered on the insurance card. I have thought that this needed changed long ago and am happy to see this change. One change within Medicare that I am welcoming.
